The wild headland on the villa's doorstep: Cala Sassari beach five minutes away, snorkelling coves, a Tavolara horizon, and how to plan easy beach days from Golfo Aranci.

Punta Pedrosa, Sardinia: The Wild Coastline Below Villa Cala Sassari

Punta Pedrosa is a quiet headland in the municipality of Golfo Aranci, in north-east Sardinia, sheltering a string of small coves along the SP 82 coastal road between Olbia and Golfo Aranci. Villa Cala Sassari sits directly within this locality, placing its guests no more than 500 metres on foot from Cala Sassari beach — the long sandy bay that gives the villa its name. For a group arriving from Olbia airport, the drive to the villa takes roughly 20 minutes, which means the beaches here are often the first sight of Sardinian sea most guests encounter.

Getting to Punta Pedrosa and Its Beaches

From Villa Cala Sassari on foot or by car: Cala Sassari beach is the nearest shore, reachable in around five minutes on foot. From the villa, follow the track towards the coast; the beach is well signposted. For the smaller, rockier coves of Punta Pedrosa itself — including the intimate Cala Punta Pedrosa — take the SP 82 towards Olbia, follow signs for the Terrata locality, and park at the end of the unmade road. A short walk through Mediterranean scrub brings you to the water's edge.

From Olbia Airport: Head south on the SS 125 towards Costa Smeralda, then join the SP 82 towards Golfo Aranci. Continue through Pittulongu and Terrata until the Punta Pedrosa turn-off appears on the right, approximately at the 10.7 km mark on the SP 82. The total journey from the airport is around 20 minutes by car under normal traffic conditions, covering roughly 21 km.

Best Time to Visit

The beaches of Punta Pedrosa are at their best from June to mid-September, when sea temperatures are warm and afternoon light turns the water from turquoise to deep jade. July and August bring the highest visitor numbers; arriving at the coves before 9 a.m. or after 5 p.m. means quieter water and cooler sand. Late May and September are worth serious consideration for family groups: the sea is fully swimmable, the light is exceptional, and the coast retains its unhurried character without peak-season congestion.

Practical Tips

Parking: A free car park behind the dunes serves Cala Sassari. It fills quickly in August; the overflow option is Spiaggia Bianca, around 500 metres to the north-east. For the smaller Punta Pedrosa coves, roadside spaces are limited — arrive early or walk from the villa.

Facilities at Cala Sassari: The beach has a bar, a restaurant, sunbed and umbrella rental, and boat hire. Accessibility services are also available. There are no comparable facilities at the wilder Punta Pedrosa coves themselves, so carry water.

What to bring: Snorkelling gear rewards anyone willing to explore the submerged rocks along the bay edges. The seabed is sandy and slopes gently, making entry easy for all ages. Water shoes are useful at the rockier coves. The shoreline faces south-west, so afternoon sun is direct and shade scarce — a beach umbrella is worth packing if you are not renting one on-site.

An Insider Detail

The panorama from the Punta Pedrosa headland is one of the finest in northern Sardinia. On a clear day the silhouette of Isola Tavolara rises unmistakably to the south-west, Capo Figari closes the view to the north, and the smaller Isola di Figarolo sits just offshore. Local swimmers know that the submerged rocks at the southern end of Cala Sassari hold particularly good marine life — posidonia meadows, sea bream, and the occasional octopus visible in the shallower sections.

The coastline of Punta Pedrosa is, in effect, the natural extension of Villa Cala Sassari's garden. Guests who base themselves at the villa find that this stretch of shore — wild enough to feel private, well-equipped enough to be effortless — is rarely more than a short walk away, making long, unhurried beach days the natural rhythm of a stay here.
