Costa Smeralda Guide: What It Is and What to See in Sardinia's Emerald Coast

The Costa Smeralda is a 55-kilometre stretch of coastline in north-east Sardinia, running through the municipality of Arzachena and framing some of the most photographed sea in the Mediterranean. Villa Cala Sassari sits roughly 40 minutes south by car in Punta Pedrosa, Golfo Aranci — close enough to make a full day on the Emerald Coast entirely straightforward, yet far enough that the villa's own stretch of coast stays refreshingly quiet.

A Coast Built with Purpose

In 1962, a group of investors led by Prince Karim Aga Khan IV signed the founding documents of the Consorzio Costa Smeralda in Olbia, transforming what had been wild, roadless Gallura coastline into one of Europe's most exclusive destinations. The consortium established a rigorous Architectural Committee — drawing on architects Luigi Vietti, Jacques Couëlle, Michele Busiri Vici and Antonio Simon Mossa — to ensure that every building harmonised with the Sardinian landscape rather than disrupting it. The result is a coastline where hotels, villas, and even the petrol stations observe the same palette of ochre, white and rose granite, making the built environment feel continuous with the scrubland behind it.

What to See: Porto Cervo and the Villages

Porto Cervo, designed by Luigi Vietti and inaugurated in 1964, is the centre of gravity for the whole coast. The Sottopiazza and the web of alleys above the old harbour offer a concentrated version of what the Costa Smeralda does best: considered architecture, designer boutiques, and a marina with around 700 berths accommodating yachts up to 120 metres. Above the piazzetta, the Stella Maris Church contains a Mater Dolorosa attributed to El Greco. Baia Sardinia, a quieter satellite village to the north, and the inland market village of San Pantaleo both make pleasant half-day alternatives when the main harbour feels too busy.

The Beaches

Spiaggia del Principe — named in honour of the Aga Khan — is widely considered the finest on the coast: a wide crescent of white sand with clear, shallow water and rocks providing natural shade at the edges. Capriccioli, south of Porto Cervo, balances impressive water quality with relative accessibility. For groups arriving from Villa Cala Sassari, a practical approach is to swim at Capriccioli in the morning, walk the harbour at midday, and return south along the SS 125, stopping at Cala di Volpe or Liscia Ruja on the way back.

Getting There from Villa Cala Sassari

From Punta Pedrosa take the SP 82 towards Olbia, join the SS 125 north towards Palau, then follow signs for Porto Cervo via the SP 94. Allow around 40 minutes in low season and 55 to 65 minutes in July and August when the approach roads tighten. Parking in Porto Cervo itself is limited in summer — the paid car parks just above the Sottopiazza are the most reliable option. Free parking is more readily found at Capriccioli, from which a short walk brings you to the beach.

Best Time to Visit

June and September hit the balance most families find ideal: the sea is fully warm, the light is superb, and crowds on the beaches and in Porto Cervo are noticeably lower than in high summer. July and August remain the busiest period by a wide margin — the marina particularly fills from the second week of July — but the evening atmosphere in Porto Cervo during that window has an energy worth experiencing at least once.

The beaches of the Costa Smeralda share the same geological and chromatic character as the water visible from Villa Cala Sassari's large heated pool — the same granite, the same posidonia meadows, the same shift from turquoise to cobalt as the seabed deepens. An afternoon drive north simply extends the same landscape into one of its most celebrated expressions.
